동백나무 (Camellia japonica, ツバキ, Common camellia)

 

차나무과의 상록활엽소교목. 우리나라, 일본, 중국 등이 원산으로 18세기 말쯤에 예수회 선교사 카멜에 의해 유럽에 전해졌다고 하는데, 그래서 동백나무의 학명 중 속명이 카멜리아(Camelia)가 되었다고 한다. 해풍과 염기에 매우 강해서 주로 남쪽 해변에 분포한다. 꽃은 1월~3월에 핀다. 꽃가루 받이는 특이하게 동박새가 하는 조매화이다.

 

동백나무는 꽃이 질 때 꽃잎이 한 장씩 떨어지는 게 아니라 커다란 꽃이 송이째 뚝뚝 떨어져 보는 사람의 가슴을 처연하게 만든다. 화려했던 삶도 찰나에 지고 마는 것이 인생이라는 불교의 교리와도 맞아 떨어지는 점이 있어서 인지 사찰 주변에 많이 심는다.

 

동백열매는 지름 3~5cm로서 둥글고 녹색바탕에 붉은색이 돌며 9월~10월에 성숙한다. 과피가 떨어지면서 1.5~2cm 크기의 잣모양의 암갈색 종자가 떨어지며, 3~9개의 종자가 들어 있다. 동백씨에는 식용기름이 함유되어 있으며 불포화 지방산 함량이 높아 식용유로도 사용하고, 화장품 원료와 머리기름 등으로도 쓰였다.

 

Camellia japonica, known as common camellia, Japanese camellia, or tsubaki in Japanese, is one of the best known species of the genus Camellia. Sometimes called the rose of winter, it belongs to the family Theaceae. It is the official state flower of the US state of Alabama. There are thousands of cultivars of C. japonica in cultivation, with many colors and forms of flowers. In the U.S. it is sometimes called japonica, a name more often used in the UK for Chaenomeles (flowering quince). In the wild, it is found in mainland China (Shandong, east Zhejiang), Taiwan, southern Korea and southern Japan.
