납매 (Chimonanthus praecox, Wintersweet)

섣달을 뜻하는 납(臘)에 매화를 뜻하는 매(梅)를 합한 말로, 섣달(음력 12월)에 피는 매화라는 뜻의 이름으로 중국이 원산인 받침꽃과의 낙엽관목이다. 앞서 소개한 동백나무와 납매는 봄꽃나무라기 보다 겨울꽃나무라고 하는 것이 더 어울릴지 모르겠다. 납매의 꽃 모양이 매화와 비슷해 보이는 지는 보는 사람 마음이지만, 매화처럼 일찍 꽃이 피고 강한 향을 풍기니 그리 불러도 될 듯하다. 꽃을 보기 힘든 이른 봄 충남 태안의 천리포수목원이나 전주수목원, 경기 용인의 한택식물원 등에서 만날 수 있다.

 

Chimonanthus praecox, also known as wintersweet or Japanese allspice, is a species of flowering plant in the genus Chimonanthus of the family Calycanthaceae, native to China. The plant is known as làméi (蠟梅) in Chinese, rōbai (蝋梅) in Japanese, and Korean: Nab Mae; Hanja: 납매(蠟梅) in Korean.

It is a vigorous deciduous shrub growing to 4 m (13 ft) tall with an erect trunk and leaves 5–29 cm (2–11 in) long and 2–12 cm (1–5 in) broad. Its strongly scented pendent flowers, produced in winter (between November and March in UK) on bare stems, have 15-21 yellow or pale green-yellow, tepals, the inner ones usually with purplish red pigments.
