봄꽃 이야기 (1) - 복수초와 애기복수초

 

미나리아재비과의 여러해살이풀. 동부 시베리아와 전국 각지의 산에서 자란다. 높이 20~30cm. 2~3월에 지름 3~4cm의 노란색 꽃이 잎보다 먼저 줄기 끝에 한 개씩 달리며 꽃잎은 20~30장 정도로 많다. 잎은 잘게 갈라진다. 꽃이 황금색 잔처럼 생겼다고 측금잔화, 설날에 핀다고 원일초, 눈 속에 피는 연꽃 같다고 설연화, 쌓인 눈을 뚫고 나와 꽃이 피면 그 주위가 동그랗게 녹아 구멍이 난다고 눈색이꽃, 얼음새꽃이라도 부른다. 한방에서는 복수초를 강심제 및 이뇨제로 사용한다. 그러나 잎이나 줄기, 뿌리는 물론 꽃에도 독성이 있어 함부로 복용해서는 안된다.

 

복수초속에 속하는 식물은 아시아와 유럽이 원산으로 세게적으로는 20~30 종이 있고, 붉거나 노란색의 꽃을 피우며, 꽃잎은 5~30장이다. 한국에는 복수초 (Adonis amurensis) 외에 개복수초 (Adonis pseudoamurensis), 세복수초 (Adonis multiflora) 등 3종이 분포하며, 복수초와 개복수초, 세복수초의 차이는 복수초는 줄기가 나누어 지지 않고, 나머지 둘은 줄기가 나누어 지고, 세복수초는 우리나라에서는 제주에만 분포하고 잎이 가늘게 나누어 진다. 복수초의 아종으로 중부 이북에 1000m 넘는 고산에 주로 자라는 왜소한 복수초를 애기복수초라 부르기도 한다.

 

복수초의 속명은 아도니스 (Adonis)이다. 아도니스는 그리스 신화에 나오는 미소년으로 여신 아프로디테(Aphrodite)의 사랑을 받았으나, 사냥을 하다가 멧돼지에게 물려 죽었다. 그가 죽으면서 흘린 피에서 아도니스 (복수초) 또는 아네모네 (바람꽃)가, 여신의 눈물에서 장미꽃이 피어났다고 한다. 현대 학자들은 아도니스를 해마다 죽었다가 부활하는 자연의 순환을 나타내는 초목의 정령이라 보기도 하고, '아도니스'라는 이름, 죽어서 꽃이 되었다는 것, 그리고 반은 지하에서 반은 지상에서 산다는 점에서, 그리스 신화 정착 이전의 식물신이 그리스 신화에 편입된 것 아니냐는 추측도 있다. 유럽에서 자라는 아도니스에는 진홍빛의 꽃이 피는 복수초 여름복수초(Adonis aestivalis)가 있다.

 

Adonis amurensis, commonly known as Amur adonis and pheasant's eye, is a perennial plant with a golden yellow flower belonging to the Ranunculales order, and native to China (Heilongjiang, Jilin, Liaoning), Japan (Hokkaido), Korea, and Russian Far East (Primorye, Amur, Sakhalin). The Japanese name Fukujusō means fortune-longevity-plant.

フクジュソウ（福寿草、献歳菊、学名：Adonis ramosa）は、キンポウゲ科の多年草。別名、ガンジツソウ（元日草）。毒草である。1月1日の誕生花。

 

Adonis is a genus of about 20–30 species of flowering plants of the crowfoot family, Ranunculaceae, native to Europe and Asia. The species grow to 10–40 centimetres (3.9–15.7 in) in height, with feathery, finely divided leaves. Their flowers are red, yellow or orange and have 5–30 petals. The Autumn Adonis, pheasant's-eye (A. annua), has flowers with bright red petals.

The generic name Adonis refers to the mythical character Adonis, a lover of the goddess Aphrodite or Venus, and of Persephone, goddess of the underworld. Red flowers of the Adonis genus are said to have grown from the grave of Adonis, after he was slain by a wild boar possessed with unusual viciousness through instigation by the jealous Ares. According to the Metamorphoses of Ovid the anemone, also of the family Ranunculaceae, was created when Venus sprinkled nectar on his blood.
